Also called "Chat Programs". These applications are installed on a PC by a user, and allow immediate "chats" between other users of the program. Some of these programs also allow audio or video conferencing as well as the ability to execute file transfers.
GOIM (Gamers Own Instant Messenger) is a full featured jabber / XMPP client with special features (extensions) for gamers. (e.g. broadcasting a notification when you join a server, or seeing which games others play and joining them with one click on the game icon beside their name). It also features an InGame Messenger which supports most DX8 games and supports the jabber XFireGateway which allows communication with your XFire buddies. Version 1.1 may include release adds an InGameMessenger for DX8 games and a GameServer Browser for HLSW serverlists
